Paper repair to outer margin of title, plate 17 (Joannis de Ney) replaced with a portrait from another work, small tear to lower margin of plate 34, light marginal dampstaining, some spotting and fingermarks.

FIRST EDITION of this album of portraits of noted scientists, writers, and theologians of the Netherlands, taken from portrait paintings in the collection of ecclesiastical historian Aubertus Miraeus. HAECKEL, ERNST, attrib.:Late nineteenth-century album of 20 watercolors and 5 pen-and-ink drawings of landscapes in Bali, Sumatra and Southeast Asia, identified in an unknown hand as the work of Ernst Haeckel, 195 x 260 (sheet size), watercolors vary, each captioned descriptively beneath and numbered 1-25 in the upper corner, 38 leaves total (13 blank), in original half-morocco album, recently rebacked, titled in gilt to upper cover \"Aquarellen im Zeichnungen.\"

A FINE, ACCOMPLISHED COLLECTION OF DRAWINGS AND WATERCOLORS IN THE STYLE OF ERNST HAECKEL, accompanied by a manuscript note in the upper margin of one drawing identifying it as Haeckel. Haeckel famously documented the region.

Yes, 1954 was a critical year, but my first works featuring the sign, which I made on paper, were born in 1953. The impressions in this modern fine press edition are darker and clearer than the original 1543 and 1555 editions of the Fabrica. AN 18TH-CENTURY ALCHEMICAL MANUSCRIPT, five treatises in five different hands, including a brief tract on the philosopher\'s stone. A manuscript label lists the contents of the manuscript which include a look at the medical aspects of human excrement, the tract on the philosopher\'s stone, a commentary on the 1660 edition of Joachim Poleman\'s Novum Lumen Medicum, a commentary on Johann Gottfried Jugel\'s Prima Materia Metallorum (first published 1754), and finally a tract titled Aurea Catena Homeri, on the medical applications of sulphurs and metals.

Full green crushed morocco, gilt; occasional foxing and spotting, faint crease to lower corner throughout most of text block, one map remounted, in custom cloth slipcase. Note card with Vishniac\'s handwritten list of some of the animals depicted laid-in.

FIRST EDITION of Kircher\'s \"fanciful and speculative elucidation of the biblical story of the Flood. Kircher figures such specifics as the year of the Flood, the time form the first raindrop until Noah stepped out on dry land, the dimensions and shape of the ark (considered symbolic of the human body bearing the soul), the materials the ark was made of, where the various animals were placed, which animals would have been excluded, where the ark landed, and where everyone dispersed after the Flood\" (Merrill). Among the numerous delightful woodcuts of animals are imaginary creatures such as the mermaid, unicorn and gryphon.
