Edmund Davis came into his inheritance at 27 years old, and turned most of his attention to angling. He was a founding member of the Cascapedia Club, and his work on one of the great North American Salmon rivers is scarce. Bruns D25; Gee 88; Litchfield 71.

Repairs and scuffing to covers, stains to title page, ownership inscription on front blank, repaired tear to first leaf of text, light dampstaining along outside edge in margins, scattered foxing and browning.

FIRST EDITION of what was to be a first volume on Pistorius\' compendium of Kabalistic literature. A second volume, covering Jewish rather than Christian literature on the subject, was planned but never completed. Born Lutheran, Pistorius studied medicine and theology, eventually converted to Calvinism, and then again to Catholicism. He entered the priesthood, and served as religious adviser and confessor to Emperor Rudolph II. Adams P-1315; Caillet 8702; Graesse V, 535.

LIMITED EDITION, number 434 of 615 copies. This copy includes the \"Characterum Indices,\" letterpress transcriptions of Vesalius\'s explanatory notes keyed to the woodcuts, printed from 227 of the original woodblocks used for Vesalius\'s De humani corporis fabrica and his Epitome, which were tragically destroyed during World War II. The impressions in this modern fine press edition are darker and clearer than the original 1543 and 1555 editions of the Fabrica. Impressive Mookite Jasper Carving of a Rooster--THE STRUTTING PEACOCK OF THE CHINESE ZODIAC\" by Luis Alberto Quispe Aparicio :2014 was the year of the Rooster and this fine carving is sure to attract those born in this year. Quick thinkers who are practical and resourceful, they prefer to stick to what is tried and true rather than taking unnecessary risks. Keenly observant, it is difficult to slip anything past a Rooster, since they seem to have eyes in the backs of their heads! This quality can lead others to think the Rooster is psychic, but that\'s not generally the case; instead, this Sign enjoys a keen attention to detail that makes it a whiz at anything requiring close analysis. In the nineteen-fifties, when most of the serious art being done was abstract, Katz outraged scores of artists and formalist critics by inventing new ways to paint the human figure. He has always had his own direction, which has not been the direction of mainstream art in any of the last seven decades. In a Katz painting, style—the way it’s painted—is the primary element. His confident, crisply articulated technique makes us see the world the way he sees it, clear and up close, with all but the most essential details pared away. (…)

His main influences were television ads, movie closeups, Japanese prints (by Utamaro, in particular), and billboards (…).

Katz had found a way to paint portraits that he described, as “brand-new terrific.” Ignoring character and mood, he offered the pure sensation of outward appearance—not who the people were, but how they appeared at a specific moment. “I can’t think of anything more exciting than the surface of things,” he later told an interviewer.

Second edition, published more than 150 years after the first edition of 1592, with commentary and notes by Giovanni Antonion Bianchi, and a biography of Colonna by Iano Planco. The illustrations are believed to have been printed from the original plates and hand-engraved by Colonna himself. Nissen BBI 386; Pritzel 1822.

4to. Half-title, title printed in red and black, verso with limitation page, numerous illustrations and plates. Original full scarlet morocco, covers ruled in gilt with gilt horse head devices at each corner, spine in six panels, raised bands, top edge gilt. Some scuffs and soiling to covers, light chipping at outside edge of upper cover, upper joint starting, a few fingermarks.

LIMITED EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY, number 10 of 50 copies, with an ORIGINAL PEN-AND-INK DRAWING, highlighted in gouache, of the race in the blizzard of 1901, signed by Brown, and bound in before the title. A classic work on the history of the Grand National, one of the great horse races of the sporting calendar, run every April since 1839 at Aintree, near Liverpool. The Grand National is considered to be one of the hardest steeplechase races in the world, with over 30 huge jumps, run over 4 miles and 514 yards. At least 40 horses start, and fewer than 10 generally finish — in 1928 only two horses finished. The drawing in this copy is the original of the illustration opposite p 37.
