One of the most famous works of English Alchemy, the Ordinal is a 15th-century poem of 3000+ lines composed by Thomas Norton (c.1433–1513) the chief disciple of England\'s grandmaster of Alchemy, George Ripley (from whom Norton here says he \"learned all the secrets of Alkimy\"). The Ordinal is a broad-based work of alchemy discussing the philosopher\'s stone and the transmutation of the elements into gold, together with the medicinal aspects of alchemy; it additionally conveys specific information about the relevance of color, music, and the positioning of the planets to the alchemical process. The Ordinal was first published in English in Ashmole\'s Theatrum Chemicum Britannicum (1652). There are minor differences between this text and that printed by Ashmole, suggesting either a pre-1652 date of transcription or an alternative manuscript tradition. Only some 32 manuscript exemplars of this text are known to be extant.

FIRST EDITION of Grew\'s catalogue of the museum of the Royal Academy. He was the secretary of the Society, and an early advocate of microscopy who coined the term \"comparative anatomy.\" Garrison-Morton 297; Nissen ZBI 1714; Wing G-1952; Wood, p 369.

The British artist Jason Martin expands the possibilities of painting with his innovative approach in using unusual materials which serve as paint. He attracted international attention with his large, brushed oil paintings, executed in thin layers of paint with self-made comb-like tools – such as the one being auctioned off. Because of the light bouncing off the shiny surface, experiencing the work in person is like walking towards a sculpture rather than a painting.

“There’s never really any single point to review the work or to experience the work, it’s about moving around. But there is a stillness as well, in that the organisation of the marks all collide into a central or suggested central point. […] When you encounter a work of mine, there is an academic approach to the performative act, the gestural act. I have a series of reduced movements that then compile in a composition. And you also look through it, because there is this implied sense of looking through, this illusion. […] I would suggest that my paintings are a hybrid between that naturalism, that looking through, that perspectival space, that implied pictorial depth and the didactic, academic concerns of abstraction, which are for me physical and arm-led, or I immerse my body into the whole making of the work. And they sit very much in between these two places, these two worlds. [...]”

Covers detached, front endpapers and first leaf (additional engraved title) separated from text block, top margins somewhat tightly trimmed, scattered browning and spotting.
Provenance: Boies Penrose II (American travel writer and historian, 1902-1976, 2 bookplates).

Third edition. Wilkins\' bold assertions in his various editions of this book include the possibility that the moon might be inhabited, that humans might be able to find a way to travel there, and that the Earth might indeed be a planet. An Anglican clergyman and Bishop of Chester, Wilkins was a visionary polymath who remained well-respected in science and the clergy, despite his sometimes controversial writings. In addition to writing on mathematics, religious philosophy, and astronomy, he proposed a universal language, and a universal system of measurement that predated the metric system. RÖSEL VON ROSENHOF\'S COMPLETE WORKS ON INSECTS, including the much rarer posthumous work, completed by his daughter Katharina and her husband, artist and astronomer Christian Friedrich Carl Kleemann. Born to an aristocratic family in Austria, August Johann Rösel was raised by his uncle, noted animal painter Wilhelm Rösel von Rosenhof, from whom he inherited the \"von Rosenhof\" title. His observations in this work cover marine invertebrates as well as insects, and his detailed classifications made him a pioneer among European entomologists, influencing Carl Linnaeus, among others. Nissen ZBI 3466 and 2201.

Folio (390 x 257 mm). title and final leaf supplied in facsimile, lacking 2 quires A and F, and with 19 leaves supplied from a later edition, engraved map of Canaan by John Speed, loosely inserted, and with its margins restored with some loss. Title to New Testament title dated 1611, set within wide woodcut pictorial borders, wood-cut head and tail pieces, calendar and almanack printed in red and black, occasional light toning, a few upper margins cut slightly close to border line. Paneled calf, antique, red speckled edges.
Collation: A1 (General Title, a facsimile of the He Bible and dated 1611), A2-4 (a2 margin slightly restored, a few restored holes affecting letters), B1-4, C1-6, D1-4: Quire A1-6 lacking (Title to genealogies and first 11 pages), B-E6, (Lacking quire F1-6), G-Z6, Aa-Zz6, Aaa-Zzz6 (rrr1 outer and lower margins torn with loss), Aaaa-Zzzz6, Aaaaa-Ccccc6;
New Testament: A-Z6 (with 15 leaves P1-6, S3-4, V5, X2-6 and Z3 all silked and damaged, and supplied from a shorter later edition, possibly the 1617 folio edition), 6A 1-5 supplied from another folio edition, 6A6 a facsimile leaf.
Provenance: Exhibited by Mr. Young (of Leicester, UK) in the early 20th Century, with a printed and manuscript exhibition label, containing manuscript notes on the typographical errors in the \"SHE\" Bible, the label loosely inserted at the front.

THE KING JAMES\' GREAT \"SHE\' BIBLE, THE SECOND FOLIO EDITION, with the reading in Ruth 3:15 corrected to \"She went into the citie,\" and with other errors including Matthew 26:36 where Judas appears for Jesus, but in this copy that error has been a corrected in an 18th century manuscript hand.

The King James Great Bible is considered to be the most important English Bible to have been printed. The biblical scholar Francis Fry described the \"SHE\" Bible as the first edition second issue without reprints, printed within two years of the first issue to correct typographical errors that were found in the text. The King James Bible was drawn up to reconcile the versions of the bible used by the Clergy, on the one hand, and the laity on the other. The translators, who numbered around 50, were divided into committees based in Oxford. Cambridge and London, and they were instructed to take the Bishops Bible as their basis and then consult with Tyndale\'s, Coverdale\'s, Matthew\'s, Whitchurch\'s and the Geneva versions to come up with an authorized text. This copy, although with facsimile first and last leaves, and two quires lacking, is substantially complete. \"From about the middle of the seventeenth century until the appearance of the Revised Bible of 1881-5, the King James\' version reigned without rival\"(Herbert 319). cf. PMM 114; STC 2224.

But there is a stillness as well, in that the organisation of the marks all collide into a central or suggested central point. […] When you encounter a work of mine, there is an academic approach to the performative act, the gestural act. I have a series of reduced movements that then compile in a composition. And you also look through it, because there is this implied sense of looking through, this illusion. […] I would suggest that my paintings are a hybrid between that naturalism, that looking through, that perspectival space, that implied pictorial depth and the didactic, academic concerns of abstraction, which are for me physical and arm-led, or I immerse my body into the whole making of the work. Covers detached, front endpapers and first leaf (additional engraved title) separated from text block, top margins somewhat tightly trimmed, scattered browning and spotting.
Provenance: Boies Penrose II (American travel writer and historian, 1902-1976, 2 bookplates).

Third edition. Wilkins\' bold assertions in his various editions of this book include the possibility that the moon might be inhabited, that humans might be able to find a way to travel there, and that the Earth might indeed be a planet. An Anglican clergyman and Bishop of Chester, Wilkins was a visionary polymath who remained well-respected in science and the clergy, despite his sometimes controversial writings. In addition to writing on mathematics, religious philosophy, and astronomy, he proposed a universal language, and a universal system of measurement that predated the metric system. Modern quarter tan morocco and marbled boards, tissue guards. Browning, foxing, and minor offsetting throughout; marginal dampstaining to volume V.

RÖSEL VON ROSENHOF\'S COMPLETE WORKS ON INSECTS, including the much rarer posthumous work, completed by his daughter Katharina and her husband, artist and astronomer Christian Friedrich Carl Kleemann. Born to an aristocratic family in Austria, August Johann Rösel was raised by his uncle, noted animal painter Wilhelm Rösel von Rosenhof, from whom he inherited the \"von Rosenhof\" title. His observations in this work cover marine invertebrates as well as insects, and his detailed classifications made him a pioneer among European entomologists, influencing Carl Linnaeus, among others. Nissen ZBI 3466 and 2201.

Folio (390 x 257 mm). title and final leaf supplied in facsimile, lacking 2 quires A and F, and with 19 leaves supplied from a later edition, engraved map of Canaan by John Speed, loosely inserted, and with its margins restored with some loss. Title to New Testament title dated 1611, set within wide woodcut pictorial borders, wood-cut head and tail pieces, calendar and almanack printed in red and black, occasional light toning, a few upper margins cut slightly close to border line. Paneled calf, antique, red speckled edges.
Collation: A1 (General Title, a facsimile of the He Bible and dated 1611), A2-4 (a2 margin slightly restored, a few restored holes affecting letters), B1-4, C1-6, D1-4: Quire A1-6 lacking (Title to genealogies and first 11 pages), B-E6, (Lacking quire F1-6), G-Z6, Aa-Zz6, Aaa-Zzz6 (rrr1 outer and lower margins torn with loss), Aaaa-Zzzz6, Aaaaa-Ccccc6;
New Testament: A-Z6 (with 15 leaves P1-6, S3-4, V5, X2-6 and Z3 all silked and damaged, and supplied from a shorter later edition, possibly the 1617 folio edition), 6A 1-5 supplied from another folio edition, 6A6 a facsimile leaf.
Provenance: Exhibited by Mr. Young (of Leicester, UK) in the early 20th Century, with a printed and manuscript exhibition label, containing manuscript notes on the typographical errors in the \"SHE\" Bible, the label loosely inserted at the front.

THE KING JAMES\' GREAT \"SHE\' BIBLE, THE SECOND FOLIO EDITION, with the reading in Ruth 3:15 corrected to \"She went into the citie,\" and with other errors including Matthew 26:36 where Judas appears for Jesus, but in this copy that error has been a corrected in an 18th century manuscript hand.

The King James Great Bible is considered to be the most important English Bible to have been printed. The biblical scholar Francis Fry described the \"SHE\" Bible as the first edition second issue without reprints, printed within two years of the first issue to correct typographical errors that were found in the text. The King James Bible was drawn up to reconcile the versions of the bible used by the Clergy, on the one hand, and the laity on the other. The translators, who numbered around 50, were divided into committees based in Oxford. Cambridge and London, and they were instructed to take the Bishops Bible as their basis and then consult with Tyndale\'s, Coverdale\'s, Matthew\'s, Whitchurch\'s and the Geneva versions to come up with an authorized text. This copy, although with facsimile first and last leaves, and two quires lacking, is substantially complete. \"From about the middle of the seventeenth century until the appearance of the Revised Bible of 1881-5, the King James\' version reigned without rival\"(Herbert 319). cf.
