4to (191 x 163 mm). Title page with woodcut borders, 7 woodcut illustrations in text, woodcut head and tail-pieces. Contemporary calf with Greek cross within a wreath stamped in gilt on upper cover. Rebacked, with repairs to corners, scattered browning and spotting.

RARE FIRST EDITION of Maier\'s mystical work on the seven metals and their corresponding planets, each represented by an allegorical woodcut. Maier was court physician to Emperor Rudolph II and spent time in England at the court of James I. His alchemical writings influenced the curious minds of Elias Ashmole and Isaac Newton. FIRST EDITION. The engravings were prepared by James Newton after drawings by the author. Barbut himself is known to have applied the hand-coloring to at least some copies. Nissen ZBI 221.

SCIENTIFIC MANUSCRIPT.:Scientific manuscript in Latin, with additions in Greek, recording a university level course of study along a classical Aristotelean model of learning, with containing sections on Logic, Physics, Metaphysics, Ethics, and Cosmography (i.e. geography), with a 1 p addendum on \"maritimort inventis,\" 179 x 112 mm, 82 leaves, written recto and verso, diagram to front pastedown, by Edward Baldwyn, 1687-1688. Bound in contemporary calf, cloth tape neatly affixed at hinges.

INTERESTING SCIENTIFIC MANUSCRIPT WRITTEN IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION OF NEWTON\'S PRINCIPIA. Featuring a long section on physics (\"Physica Systema\"), the content of this work stands in sharp and dramatic contrast to the scientific revolution then taking place in England.

Folio (364 x 223 mm). Title page printed in red and black, 80 engraved plates, 2 inserted letterpress tables. Rebacked contemporary calf. Scuffs to covers, several of the plates with repaired tears, one (plate XXX) with significant losses to margins and backed with japan paper, browning.
Provenance: Symonds family of Pengethly Manor (bookplate).

FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Translated, edited and slightly expanded by Ray from Willughby\'s Latin original. Willughby had left his encyclopedic works on animals incomplete upon his death, and Ray took it upon himself to complete and publish them. Before the final work, Historia Piscium, was completed, Ray himself had died, leaving William Derham to complete the project on behalf of the Royal Society. Isaac Newton described this work as the \"foundation of scientific Ornithology.\" Anker 532; ESTC R9288; Keynes 39; Nissen IVB 991.

4to (180 x 132 mm). Engraved title vignette, engraved initial, 20 alchemical engravings. Recent vellum, spine titled in gilt, 12 of the engravings effaced with early ink and rubbing (possibly by a censor), engraving at Z3v stained, leaf O2r with large repaired tear, ink marginalia in several unidentified early hands, one trimmed.

RARE, ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS BOOKS IN ALL OF ALCHEMY, printed as part two of De Alchemia Opuscula complura veterum philosophorum..., and containing the complete set of the 20 famous woodcuts. A collection of alchemical wisdom, this \"Philosophers\' Rose Garden\" appeared in many manuscript forms throughout the 16th-18th centuries, none of them however predating this printed edition. The influence of the work spans Michael Maier and Isaac Newton, carrying into the 20th-century from Carl Jung to Leonard Cohen. Ferguson I, p.19.
