FIRST EDITION of \"the first book about insects published in Britain\" (Salmon, Aurelian Legacy, p 95). Compiled in the late 16th century by Moffett, who is often mistakenly said to have used a microscope in his observations, but in fact made the highly accurate woodcuts with the naked eye. Sir Theodore Turquet de Mayerne published the work posthumously from the manuscript, which is preserved today in the British Library. The illustration of the American Swallowtail on p 98 is the first printed representation of an American butterfly. There are three variant imprints, this example with p 48 incorrectly numbered 52, but these variants do not indicate a chronology — simply that the edition was shared among booksellers. FIRST EDITION. German physicist Gaspar Schott, who entered the Society of Jesus in 1627, was a student of Athanasius Kircher and in correspondence with many of the great scientists of his day including Robert Boyle, Otto von Guericke, and Christiaan Huygens. The present work is a huge collection of descriptions of some of his colleagues\' work along with many other curiosities including perpetual motion machines, a chronometer, hydraulics, etc. Norman 1911; Tomash Williams S60.

Small folio (268 x 178 mm). Engraved vignette on title page, 2 large woodcut coats-of-arms, numerous woodcut initials, illustrations, head- and tail-pieces in text, errata leaf at end. Modern quarter calf antique and marbled boards, edges gilt, large bookplate and blue morocco blind-stamped coats-of-arms cut from earlier binding and laid down to front endpapers. Marginal paper repairs to some edges and corners, lacking initial blank, dampstaining from leaf D1 to end, old ink ownership inscriptions to title, ink marginalia, minor soiling and staining.

Second edition, but considered superior to the first, as it was greatly expanded by the author\'s son, Thomas Digges (c.1546-1595). This work on practical applied geometry contains the first description of the theodolite, one of Leonard Digges\'s inventions, and the earliest description of what we would come to call the telescope. SECOND EDITION of Thomas Johnson\'s expanded version of 1633, which corrected many of the errors found in Gerard\'s original edition of 1597. Johnson\'s edition gave Gerard\'s work the importance that it holds in the history of botany. This example bears ownership inscriptions linking it to a colonial Quaker family in New Jersey. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Translated, edited and slightly expanded by Ray from Willughby\'s Latin original. Willughby had left his encyclopedic works on animals incomplete upon his death, and Ray took it upon himself to complete and publish them. Before the final work, Historia Piscium, was completed, Ray himself had died, leaving William Derham to complete the project on behalf of the Royal Society. Covers slightly warped, plates and engraved title trimmed to image borders and laid down on old laid paper, some with partial hand-coloring, a few chips and tears into image areas, light spotting and toning.

Though the plates are not signed by Payne, this appears to be a later edition of Payne\'s Flora, published by Roger Daniel under the dual Latin and English titles \"Animalium quadrupedum, auium, florum, fructuum, muscarum et vermium omnis generis verae delineationes in æes incisae. mdah; A booke of beast, birds, flowers, fruits, flies, and wormes, exactly drawne with their liuely colours truly described.\" This edition formed the basis for Roger Walton\'s pattern book A View of the Creation (1666), which copies the plates from this edition very closely. Payne studied engraving under the Dutch masters William and Simon van de Passe, and his flowers are copied from Crispijn van de Passe\'s Altera Pars (1603-1605). The animals are derived from Joris Hoefnagel\'s Archetypa studaque (1592).
