FIRST EDITION of Danti\'s translation of the influential astronomical text by Proclus, the Neo-Platonic philosopher who lived and wrote in a time that was on the threshold between the ancient world and the Middle Ages. Danti taught at the University of Pisa, and was Cosmographer to the Medici court. His treatise on the use of the astrolabe, bound here after the work of Proclus, was the first book on the subject published in Italy. 4to (204 x 158 mm). Text in French and German, French title page dated 1756, engraved German title page dated 1744, 43 engraved illustrations in text. Contemporary brokatpapier boards, rebacked in modern quarter morocco, depicting allegorical figures of spring and summer framed in foliate borders. Boards worn, corners bumped, top margin of German title page trimmed away to remove old ownership inscription (with visible offsetting on French title page), light spotting and minor stains.
Bilingual edition with French text by Jacques Anthony Chauvin, but with new plates created from the final state of Merian\'s original plates. The images reproduce parts of the Totentanz fresco (c.1440) that lined a cemetery wall in Basel. Merian\'s engravings, first published in 1621, made the fresco famous throughout Europe. Die vorliegende Gouache wird in das in Vorbereitung befindliche, vom Comité Léger herausgegebene Werkverzeichnis aufgenommen.
Das Thema der Bauarbeiter ist eines der bekanntesten Projekte der 1940er und frühen 1950er Jahre, als es zum Hauptthema von Légers Arbeit wurde.
Léger selbst hat berichtet, wie er zu diesem Thema kam: „Die Idee kam mir, als ich jeden Abend mit dem Auto nach Chevreuse fuhr. Dort war auf dem Feld eine Fabrik im Bau. Ich sah die Männer, die hoch oben auf den Stahlträgern schwankten! Ich sah den Menschen wie einen Floh: Er schien immer noch in seinen Erfindungen versunken zu sein, während der Himmel über ihm war. Das wollte ich darstellen, den Kontrast zwischen dem Menschen und seinen Erfindungen, zwischen dem Arbeiter und der ganzen Metallarchitektur, dieser Härte, diesem Eisenwerk, diesen Bolzen und Nieten. Auch die Wolken habe ich technisch arrangiert, aber sie bilden einen Kontrast zu den Trägern“.

FIRST EDITION (Cavellat issue). One of the most important ornithological works of the Renaissance illustrated with beautiful woodcuts drawn from observation of live specimens. Belon, \"one of the founders of the renewed studies of birds ... mentions about two hundred different birds, mainly European, but some foreign. He made many original observations ... [also treating] anatomical and morphological conditions\" (Anker), whilst also drawing upon earlier writers such as Aristotle and Pliny.
