Stelluti\'s examination of petrified wood and other fossils follows his earlier works Apiarium (1625, with Federico Cesi) and Persio tradotto in verso sciolto e dichiarato (1630), among the first published works containing illustrations of organisms as viewed through the microscope. Folio (342 x 207 mm). 10 engraved plates (2 engraved on the verso of another plate, some folding). Modern quarter morocco and marbled boards. A few underlined passages, toning and minor spotting.
FIRST EDITION, eventually completed with the posthumous publication of the second edition in 1735. Often believed to have been used as a resource by Goethe during the writing of Faust, this treatise on alchemy, cosmology, and necromancy expands beyond the transmutation of metals (considered to be the primary focus of alchemy), into a complete philosophical-cosmological system, based on the Kabbalah. It also influenced the ideas of the Rosicrucian movement and the American Society of Harmony, founded by Georg Rapp in 1805.

Engraved title page by Matthäus Greuter, engraved portrait of Perseus, one engraved plate, 5 engraved illustrations in text, woodcut initials. 18th century morocco gilt, rebacked retaining original spine, ruled in gilt with 5 raised bands, marbled endpapers. Margins somewhat trimmed, with loss to edges of engraved border on title; Scattered browning and spotting, booklabel on front paste-down.
This book, printed with both the Latin text of Aulus Persius Flaccus and the Italian translation by Stelluti, was the first published book containing microscopic illustrations: a bee on p 52, and weevil on p 127. Stelluti used a microscope belonging to Galileo to make his observations for the illustrations. FIRST EDITION, with engraved illustration comparing the body to a house (replaced with a woodcut of this image in the 1721 edition). The work is divided into parts covering various subjects, including theology, astronomy, medicine, botany, and others. Polish physician Tobias Cohn was educated at Krakow, Frankfort, and Padua, and became physician to five successive Ottoman Sultans.
