Oblong 8vo (110 x 142 mm). Engraved printer\'s device on title, engraved armorial dedication on verso of title, 122 engraved full-page maps plans. Rebacked contemporary brown morocco gilt, retaining original spine with three raised bands, all edges gilt. Wear and light soiling to covers, margins a bit trimmed, just touching first line of text on title page, light dampstaining, erased ink ownership inscription on title, paper repairs to title and last 2 leaves.

Italian edition of the \"pocket\" version of Ortelius\'s Theatrum, with plates made in the studio of Philip Galle, translated from the Latin by Giovanni Paulet d\'Anversa. Published 4 years after Ortelius\'s death, it bears the obviously erroneous publication date of 1502 on the title. Vrients added three plates of Celestial and Terrestrial maps from previous editions, and in this form it was published in Latin, Italian, Dutch, French, and English. Koeman IIIA 332:22.

Engraved title page with Medici arms, 34 double-page engraved plates (depicting 46 views and plans) by Jacques Callot, woodcut headers, footers and initials, woodcut printer\'s device on colophon. Modern quarter morocco and marbled boards. Re-margined at gutter and mounted to binder\'s stubs throughout, red ink library stamps on title and elsewhere, light browning and fingermarks, paper repairs to last leaf with slight loss, gift inscription on colophon dated 1957.
Provenance: Colonna family, Rome (library stamps).

First published in 1609, this second edition is the first to include plates engraved by Jacques Callot, who was commissioned for the work by Cosimo II de Medici. The author, a Franciscan, resided in the Holy Land from 1593 to 1597, during which time he surveyed the ancient sacred buildings, mostly in Jerusalem. In the nineteen-fifties, when most of the serious art being done was abstract, Katz outraged scores of artists and formalist critics by inventing new ways to paint the human figure. He has always had his own direction, which has not been the direction of mainstream art in any of the last seven decades. In a Katz painting, style—the way it’s painted—is the primary element. His confident, crisply articulated technique makes us see the world the way he sees it, clear and up close, with all but the most essential details pared away. (…)

His main influences were television ads, movie closeups, Japanese prints (by Utamaro, in particular), and billboards (…).

Katz had found a way to paint portraits that he described, as “brand-new terrific.” Ignoring character and mood, he offered the pure sensation of outward appearance—not who the people were, but how they appeared at a specific moment. “I can’t think of anything more exciting than the surface of things,” he later told an interviewer.

A very rare compendium of early 16th-century Venetian editions of important astrological and astronomical works, bound in a contemporary German pigskin binding. Leopold\'s compendium consists primarily of the writings of Abu Ma\'shar. The woodcuts in the last work are executed in the most accomplished Venetian manner.

EARLY ISSUE OF THE JOST AMMAN EDITION OF PARACELSUS\'S WORKS. Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, who wrote under the pen name Paracelsus, was a Renaissance pioneer of medicine as well as an astronomer and alchemist. A native of Switzerland, he was educated in Basel, Vienna, and Ferrara, and traveled extensively throughout Europe during his life as an itinerant physician. He is credited with establishing the role of chemistry in medicine, and is sometimes referred to as the \"father of toxicology.\" He recorded the first clinical descriptions of syphilis and epilepsy, and advocated the humane treatment of the mentally ill in an era when they were believed to be possessed by demons. His controversial views alienated both publishers and other physicians, and many of the ideas he proposed were not accepted as medical orthodoxy until hundreds of years after his death. A few pages re-margined at outside edges, leaf 5O2 (pp 419-420) in volume 3 torn through but complete, dampstaining, especially to last volumes, browning and spotting throughout.

The installation Running Fence, which was installed in 1976 and lasted for 14 days, is considered one of the most impor¬tant early works by the famous artist duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Standing 5.5m tall and stretching over 39km across Sonoma County and Marin County in California. The white fabric billowed in the wind, reflecting light at a variety of angles and shades, cre¬ating dazzling, shimmering contours that cut across the landscape in soft yet sharp lines. The sheer beauty of the play of light and weather on the fence contrasted sharply with the theme of separation and boundary that fences generally convey. According to the artists, a fence embodies a larger theme of human freedom and limitation.

All costs of the project were covered with the sale of studies, preparatory drawings and collages, scale models and original lithographs. The artwork being auctioned off is an original drawing which was created in this process.
