Worming to covers, front endpaper and margins of first several leaves, with paper repairs; paper repairs to edges of last 2 leaves of text, lacking plates I, XI, XIII, XVI, XXVI, and XXVII in part 3, lacking final blank, some reinforcements and repairs at creases of folding plates, scattered browning and spotting.

Lacking additional engraved title page and final blank, inked annotations on front fly-leaf, some ink underlining, browning, especially to frontispiece.

Second edition, published a year after the first, of this work on the toxic effect of vipers. Severino argued, among other things, that the magnetic effect of music could act as cure. A number of the plates have a mythological theme. Nissen 3829; Osler 3961; Waller 8893.

This copy includes the \"Characterum Indices,\" letterpress transcriptions of Vesalius\'s explanatory notes keyed to the woodcuts, printed from 227 of the original woodblocks used for Vesalius\'s De humani corporis fabrica and his Epitome, which were tragically destroyed during World War II. The impressions in this modern fine press edition are darker and clearer than the original 1543 and 1555 editions of the Fabrica. FIRST GERMAN EDITION of Kircher\'s groundbreaking work of epidemiology, an account of an outbreak of the bubonic plague in Rome, first published as Scrutinium Physico-Medicum (Rome, 1658). \"Kircher was probably the first to employ the microscope in investigating the cause of disease ... he was the first to state explicitly the theory of contagion by animalculae as the cause of infectious disease\" (Garrison-Morton). \"Kircher was perhaps the first to suggest that physicians themselves may spread the plague through unclean hands and instruments\" (Merrill).
