Small 4to (199 x 158 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved and woodcut illustrations in text. Contemporary brown suede, rebacked. Covers worn, browning and spotting, marginal tear to Bb4 and larger tear to Hh1 into text, ink ownership inscription (dated 1692) on free front endpaper.
Fourth edition, enlarged and corrected. Moxon was Hydrographer to Charles II, as well as a mapmaker, globe maker, and mathematical instrument maker. ESTC R11899; Wing M3025.

Extra engraved title page, title pages printed in red and black, 76 engraved illustrations (40 full-page, 5 folding), 8 folding letterpress tables, numerous woodcut illustrations in text. Early vellum with later morocco gilt lettering piece on spine. Worming to covers, front endpaper and margins of first several leaves, with paper repairs; paper repairs to edges of last 2 leaves of text, lacking plates I, XI, XIII, XVI, XXVI, and XXVII in part 3, lacking final blank, some reinforcements and repairs at creases of folding plates, scattered browning and spotting.

FIRST EDITION of Guericke\'s record of the famous 1657 Magdeburg experiments with air and vacuum, in which he demonstrated that two copper hemispheres could not be pulled apart by teams of horses once a vacuum was created. \"A book of prime importance in electrical discovery, air-pressure and the vacuum pump\' states Dibner, though Guericke was a Copernican and \'his experimental work represented only one facet of his attempt to reach a complete physical world view.\' As the sub-title makes clear, his book also dealt with the problems of empty space and the movement of heavenly bodies, making \'infinite space ... a conceptual possibility\" (DSB V, p 576).
