Fourth edition, enlarged and corrected. Moxon was Hydrographer to Charles II, as well as a mapmaker, globe maker, and mathematical instrument maker. ESTC R11899; Wing M3025.

One double-page plate replaced in facsimile (plate 14), a few small marginal tears, some browning and marginal staining, creasing to some leaves toward back.

First collected edition, one of the \"standard\" copies printed on foolscap (as opposed to the large paper copies). Grew, along with Malpighi in Italy, were the first to observe and publish microscopic examinations of the anatomy of plants. Henrey 162; Hunt 362; Nissen BBI 758; Wing G1945.

Swammerdam made remarkable observations on insect anatomy, including his description in this work of metamorphosis, which had never been covered in greater detail before. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ACCOUNT OF CEYLON IN ENGLISH, which provided source material and inspiration for Defoe\'s Robinson Crusoe. Whilst trading along the Coromandel coast Robert Knox (1641-1720) was forced to land at Kottiar Bay, Ceylon, whereupon he was held captive for the next nineteen years, eventually escaping in 1679. The Historical Relation of the Island of Ceylon was written on the voyage back to England, where it was published with encouragement of the East India Company and Robert Hooke of the Royal Society. \"The book influenced the work of contemporaries such as Daniel Defoe, who drew from Knox\'s experiences much of the context for, and the aspirations of, his hero in Robinson Crusoe\" (ODNB).
