4to (245 x 193 mm). Engraved vignette on title, 3 engraved tables and 16 engraved illustration plates. Contemporary calf gilt, marbled endpapers. Provenance Rudolph Bergh, dated 1847 (on front flyleaf). Scattered browning, spotting and minor dampstaining, rebacked.
WITH: Another copy, as above. Engraved plates extended on wove paper at back, including additional printing of the title page vignette. 19th-century boards. Rubbed, corners bumped, browning.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Müller was a Danish naturalist who was commissioned by Frederik V to continue the work of Georg Christian Oeder on Flora Danica, to which he added 2 volumes. As one of the first biologists to study micro-organisms, Müller was something of a pioneer, establishing new classifications for a number of animals which had been overlooked by Linnaeus. Oblong folio (290 x 183 mm). Engraved title page and 19 engraved plates. Modern brown morocco antique. Covers slightly warped, plates and engraved title trimmed to image borders and laid down on old laid paper, some with partial hand-coloring, a few chips and tears into image areas, light spotting and toning.

Though the plates are not signed by Payne, this appears to be a later edition of Payne\'s Flora, published by Roger Daniel under the dual Latin and English titles \"Animalium quadrupedum, auium, florum, fructuum, muscarum et vermium omnis generis verae delineationes in æes incisae. mdah; A booke of beast, birds, flowers, fruits, flies, and wormes, exactly drawne with their liuely colours truly described.\" This edition formed the basis for Roger Walton\'s pattern book A View of the Creation (1666), which copies the plates from this edition very closely. Payne studied engraving under the Dutch masters William and Simon van de Passe, and his flowers are copied from Crispijn van de Passe\'s Altera Pars (1603-1605). The animals are derived from Joris Hoefnagel\'s Archetypa studaque (1592).

4 volumes in two. 4to (375 x 226 mm). 120 engraved hand-colored plates. Morocco-backed, marbled-paper boards, 2nd volume, containing just volume 4 (1806) slightly smaller.
Provenance: Von Redern, Berlin (armorial bookplate, and stamp to title, in volume 1).

FIRST COMPLETE FOLIO EDITIONS OF ZOOLOGIA DANICA. Otto Muller began the comprehensive Zoologia Danica in 1779, intending it as a complete look at the fauna similar to his Flora Danica, completed with G.C. Oeder. He published two octavo volumes with the title Zoologiae Danicae prodromus before his death. The project was expanded to folio and two additional volumes added between 1788 and 1806. Although the work never fulfilled his vision, it does contain pictures and descriptions of a number of new species of mollusks and zoophytes. See Knight, English Cyclopedia, p 381. Engraved frontispiece in volume 1, title-pages printed in red and black, engraved portrait frontispiece in volume 2, 2 (of 3) double-page engraved maps, 115 engraved plates, many double-page, some folding, the majority with multiple images, and numerous engraved illustrations in text. Modern quarter morocco and red cloth. Paper repair to portrait, a few small tears, some penciled marginalia, scattered spotting and browning.

FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH of Le Brun\'s travels to Russia, Persia, India and Java, copiously illustrated with flora, fauna, native studies, costumes, antiquities and views. Also included are two particularly wide folding panoramas, one of Moscow and a second of Isfahan. Following an initial voyage to the Levant, \"In 1701, Le Bruyn started on the second of his journeys taking a ship to the country of the Samoyeds, and then proceeding to Moscow. Traveling by way of Asia Minor, he arrived in Persia where he remained for the years 1704-05. Leaving Persia he proceeded [by ship] to India [stopping at Cochin], Ceylon and the East Indies [i.e. Batavia]. He returned by much the same route, residing in Persia between 1706 and 1707 and describing the ruins of Persepolis and Pasargades\" (Howgego).
