Impressive Mookite Jasper Carving of a Rooster--THE STRUTTING PEACOCK OF THE CHINESE ZODIAC\" by Luis Alberto Quispe Aparicio :2014 was the year of the Rooster and this fine carving is sure to attract those born in this year. Quick thinkers who are practical and resourceful, they prefer to stick to what is tried and true rather than taking unnecessary risks. Keenly observant, it is difficult to slip anything past a Rooster, since they seem to have eyes in the backs of their heads! This quality can lead others to think the Rooster is psychic, but that\'s not generally the case; instead, this Sign enjoys a keen attention to detail that makes it a whiz at anything requiring close analysis. The present example is a fully life-sized lapidary figure, carved of an Australian variety of jasper known as Mookite, the rich natural variations in hues of the material are fully exploited to depict the impressive bird. In the nineteen-fifties, when most of the serious art being done was abstract, Katz outraged scores of artists and formalist critics by inventing new ways to paint the human figure. He has always had his own direction, which has not been the direction of mainstream art in any of the last seven decades. In a Katz painting, style—the way it’s painted—is the primary element. His confident, crisply articulated technique makes us see the world the way he sees it, clear and up close, with all but the most essential details pared away. (…)

His main influences were television ads, movie closeups, Japanese prints (by Utamaro, in particular), and billboards (…).

Katz had found a way to paint portraits that he described, as “brand-new terrific.” Ignoring character and mood, he offered the pure sensation of outward appearance—not who the people were, but how they appeared at a specific moment. “I can’t think of anything more exciting than the surface of things,” he later told an interviewer.

SECOND EDITION of this compilation of voyages to the Americas. \"It contains a resumé of the Histories of Acosta, Oviedo, Peter Martyr, Herrera, Laet, tc. An account of 33 voyages to America, from Columbus to Spilbergen and Schouten; notices of the expeditions of Lemaire and Peter Heyn, the conquests of Brazil by the Dutch, and descriptions of Greenland and Spitzbergen. Oblong folio (290 x 183 mm). Engraved title page and 19 engraved plates. Modern brown morocco antique. Covers slightly warped, plates and engraved title trimmed to image borders and laid down on old laid paper, some with partial hand-coloring, a few chips and tears into image areas, light spotting and toning.

Though the plates are not signed by Payne, this appears to be a later edition of Payne\'s Flora, published by Roger Daniel under the dual Latin and English titles \"Animalium quadrupedum, auium, florum, fructuum, muscarum et vermium omnis generis verae delineationes in æes incisae. mdah; A booke of beast, birds, flowers, fruits, flies, and wormes, exactly drawne with their liuely colours truly described.\" This edition formed the basis for Roger Walton\'s pattern book A View of the Creation (1666), which copies the plates from this edition very closely. Payne studied engraving under the Dutch masters William and Simon van de Passe, and his flowers are copied from Crispijn van de Passe\'s Altera Pars (1603-1605). The animals are derived from Joris Hoefnagel\'s Archetypa studaque (1592).
