FIRST EDITION of this rare work by outspoken free-thinker Vanini, denouncing atheism perhaps to re-ingratiate himself with the church. However, his second book made his radical ideas clear, and he was eventually arrested, tortured, and burned at the stake. Peignot Livres condamnés, II, 174; Thorndike VI, 568-573.
