Raphael von Ambros war Schüler Hans Makarts an der Wiener Akademie und wurde mit seinen Allegorien und Portraits weit über die Grenzen Wiens hinaus bekannt. So wurden Werke von ihm unter anderem auch im Pariser Salon ausgestellt. Er war der älteste Sohn des Komponisten und Oberstaatsanwaltssubstituts August Wilhelm Ambros (1816-1876). Ambros wurde 1878in den österreichischen Ritterstand erhoben.
