Pater stammte wie sein Lehrer Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) aus Valenciennes, wo er in seiner Jugend ausreichend Gelegenheit hatte, die in den späteren Jahren des Spanischen Erbfolgekriegs in der Stadt stationierten Soldaten zu studieren. Möglicherweise lernte Pater Watteau bereits im Knabenalter kennen, als der berühmte Künstler seiner Heimatstadt 1710 zu eben jener Zeit einen kurzen Besuch abstattete, als sich er sich selbst in einer Reihe von Gemälden und Zeichnungen militärischen Bildinhalten widmete. Pater folgte dem Beispiel seines Meisters und spezialisierte sich auf Themen aus der Welt des Militärs. 1728 legte er das Gemälde Feiernde Soldaten (Louvre, Paris) der Académie royale als Aufnahmearbeit vor.

Diese Szene eines umherreisenden Militärlagers ist ein ausgezeichnetes Beispiel für Paters Schaffen in diesem Genre. Das Bild orientiert sich an einem von Watteau begründeten Schema: Einfache Soldaten, Offiziere und Diener sowie die der Garnison von einem Lager zum nächsten folgenden Frauen und Kinder geben sich dem Müßiggang hin, zumal sie sich weit weg von der tobenden Schlacht befinden. Sie ruhen, schlafen, rauchen, spielen Karten, unterhalten sich oder geben sich ihren Tagträumen hin. Jede Figur ist mit lebendigem Witz und Dynamik beschrieben und wurde mit flüssiger, farbenfroher Malweise dargestellt.

Alastair Laing hat stilistische Ähnlichkeiten mit Werken wie dem Blindekuhspiel in Potsdam festgestellt (C. Vogtherr et al., Französische Gemälde I, Berlin 2011, Nr. 36 ([dort um 1732 datiert]).
