Provenance: Giorgio di Veroli (1890-1952, bookplate).

Alcyonius, a Venetian classicist scholar under the patronage of Pope Clement VII, was appointed Professor of Classical Greek at the University of Florence in 1522. That same year, he published this work, written in the form of a dialogue whose thesis is that exile is not an evil. It was written in elegant Latin, reminiscent of Cicero, which lead to a personal enemy accusing him of secretly plagiarizing passages from Cicero\'s lost work De Gloria, and then destroying the only existing copy of the original to hide his plagiarism. Though the accusation was groundless, it did irreparable harm to his reputation. Adams A633; Brunet I, 153; Renouard 95/6.

Modern calf antique, spine gilt in 6 compartments, morocco lettering piece. Second part bound before first part, with both title pages and front matter bound at front; library stamp on first title, top edge of title repaired, marginal dampstains at lower outside corners, some ink marginalia, scattered browning and spotting.

FIRST EDITION. Essentially a versification of Rondelet\'s Libri de piscibus, published the same year in a French edition by the same printers and re-using many of the woodcuts. Baudrier X, 257; Brunet I, 1184; Mortimer French 118; Nissen ZBI 511.

Covers chipped, especially at corners, ink ownership inscriptions on title pages, folding map at head of volume I torn with significant loss, some plates repaired, a few plates trimmed with losses, some ink marginalia, browning and spotting, a few rust holes, edge chipping with some paper repairs to corners.

FIRST EDITION. Although the author was French, no French edition was published until 1727. The later third volume includes a treatise on European orders of knighthood, in addition to the history and geography of Prussia, Poland and Russia. Folio (310 x 208 mm). Printer\'s mark on title and colophon, 122 full-page woodcut illustrations, including standing portrait of Vegetius on verso of title (and repeated twice), and 1 woodcut diagram in the text. Contemporary vellum, inked titles on spine. Soiling to covers, dampstaining to top margins, some old ink marginalia, scattered spotting and browning.

Revised Wechel edition with illustrations by the French humanist Guillaume Budé (1467-1540). This famous collection of works on Roman military systems and methods is one of two known works by Vegetius, a 4th century Roman bureaucrat. The text also includes the \"Strategematum\" of Sextus Julius Frontinus (30-104 A.D.), Roman magistrate and governor of Britain from 74-78; \"De Instruendis,\" a work on tactics by Aelianus (Greek, 2nd century A.D.); and the \"De Vocabulis rei Militaris\" of Julius Modestus, a Roman grammarian in the time of Augustus. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Translated, edited and slightly expanded by Ray from Willughby\'s Latin original. Willughby had left his encyclopedic works on animals incomplete upon his death, and Ray took it upon himself to complete and publish them. Before the final work, Historia Piscium, was completed, Ray himself had died, leaving William Derham to complete the project on behalf of the Royal Society. FIRST EDITION of what was to be a first volume on Pistorius\' compendium of Kabalistic literature. A second volume, covering Jewish rather than Christian literature on the subject, was planned but never completed. Born Lutheran, Pistorius studied medicine and theology, eventually converted to Calvinism, and then again to Catholicism. He entered the priesthood, and served as religious adviser and confessor to Emperor Rudolph II. Adams P-1315; Caillet 8702; Graesse V, 535.

Includes case studies of satyrs, centaurs, marine monsters, cyclops, two-headed animals and a man with a head on his belly, among other curiosities, as well as a discussion of demonology.

8vo (197 x 125 mm). Engraved frontispiece, additional engraved vignette title page, 9 folding tables, 16 lithographic plates (5 folding), 2 hand-colored folding engraved maps. Contemporary marbled boards, hand-inked paper lettering piece on spine. Spine ends bumped and chipped, a bit worn, scattered spotting, some curling and browning to edges of folding plates.

Swiss geologist and professor Hugi made the first scientific study of Alpine glaciers and was a member of the first party to attempt climbing the Finsteraarhorn in the Bernese Alps in 1829, although he did not reach the summit himself. The title page vignette depicts the construction of a hut on the Unteraar glacier in 1830, which is marked on one of the maps. This proved to have an unintended scientific benefit, as the movement of the hut down the glacier over the next several years would yield valuable information about glacial movement.
