Second, but first illustrated, edition of a treatise on the unicorn. Bartholin, Professor of Medicine at the University of Copenhagen, examines the history and mythology of the unicorn, together with a study of other one-horned animals such as the narwhal and rhinoceros. The illustrations include a fine frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe, and a copy of Durer\'s celebrated picture of the first rhinoceros imported into Europe. FIRST EDITION. Sturm, professor of mathematics and physics at the University of Altdorf, presents his experiments relating to hydrostatics, pneumatics, optics and magnetism, his descriptions of recent inventions such as an airship (using four spheres made of very thin copper foil tethered to the craft, the illustration showing a man steering with use of an oar), diving bell, microscope, air pump, and barometer. A second part was published in 1685 and they often appear together. Krivatsy 11539.

Second edition, published a year after the first, of this work on the toxic effect of vipers. Severino argued, among other things, that the magnetic effect of music could act as cure. A number of the plates have a mythological theme. Nissen 3829; Osler 3961; Waller 8893.

FIRST EDITION, published after the appearance of Halley\'s comet in December of 1758. Winthrop endeavors to calm the fears of people by explaining the science behind the comet\'s appearance, just as Halley had predicted it. Winthrop was the great-grandson of his namesake, who founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He taught mathematics and natural philosophy at Harvard College, and wrote a number of other tracts on natural phenomena (such as the Lisbon earthquake of 1755), explaining the science behind their occurrence. Apianus taught mathematics at the University of Ingolstadt, wrote a number of scientific treatises on a range of topics, and designed a variety of astronomical instruments. His instrument designs and the method for using them are presented in this meticulously illustrated production from his own printing house.
