Cast in bronze and chiseled on the surface and decorated in copper, gilt and silver-gilt, the cylindrical vessel set on six beast-mask feet and decorated on the body with tenjin (apsara) in flight among clouds in bold relief bordered by a band of stylized phoenix alternating with leafy vines, and dragon and cloud roundels below, the vessel applied with dragon handles, the domed cover decorated with a lappet band encircling a stylized bats in clouds on a ground of archaistic Chinese animal forms and applied with a large coiling dragon, the interior with a copper liner

The rectangular writing surface set on a raised dais pierced on all sides supported by a flaring scalloped apron on four cabriole feet, the whole decorated in gold hiramaki-e, kinpun, and mother-of-pearl inlays on a dark brown lacquer ground, the upper surface with a fanciful design of pavilions and a pagoda by the shore with rocks and chickens among camellia, pine, and wisteria, framed by two borders, one a modification of the traditional shippo motif with a four-petaled flower in the center, and the other a floral checkerboard, the raised edge with the same shippo design but on a smaller scale than the top surface, the sides and legs decorated with butterflies and birds in wisteria and stands of two types of camellia and Chinese bellflowers

Impressive Mookite Jasper Carving of a Rooster--THE STRUTTING PEACOCK OF THE CHINESE ZODIAC\" by Luis Alberto Quispe Aparicio :2014 was the year of the Rooster and this fine carving is sure to attract those born in this year. Quick thinkers who are practical and resourceful, they prefer to stick to what is tried and true rather than taking unnecessary risks. Keenly observant, it is difficult to slip anything past a Rooster, since they seem to have eyes in the backs of their heads! This quality can lead others to think the Rooster is psychic, but that\'s not generally the case; instead, this Sign enjoys a keen attention to detail that makes it a whiz at anything requiring close analysis. The present example is a fully life-sized lapidary figure, carved of an Australian variety of jasper known as Mookite, the rich natural variations in hues of the material are fully exploited to depict the impressive bird. With Russian black obsidian under plumage beneath the gold vermeil feathers, on gold vermeil feet. Raised on a polished natural agate boulder cross-section slab. Folio (375 x 260 mm). Engraved additional title, engraved portrait of Kircher, 17 engraved plates (9 folding), 4 engravings and numerous woodcuts to text, initials, tailpieces. Later half vellum and boards; few stray pen marks to rear cover, margins of text toned and spotted, final few leaves foxed.

FIRST EDITION of the first catalogue of the Museo Kircheriano at the Roman College, a detailed inventory of Kircher\'s cabinet of curiosities of Chinese and Egyptian antiquities, scientific instruments, optical devices and ancient musical instruments. Kircher \"was in an excellent situation, at the hub of the Jesuit order, to gather relics, specimens, manuscripts, and any other oddities or rarities his fellow Jesuits brought back to Rome from all parts of the world ... In 1678 , the Museo Kircheriano was at its peak, with a new exhibit hall and a printed catalogue\" (Merrill, p xxvii). A second catalogue was published in 1709 followed by a long period of decline in the maintenance of the collection. Much of Kircher\'s collection was eventually incorporated into the Museo Nazionale.
