Jump from the towers, 2009, signed, dated Daniel Richter 09 on the reverse, oil on canvas, 60 x 50 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection, North Rhine-Westphalia

Daniel Richter is one of 德国y\'s best-known contemporary artists. In a constant balancing act between his left-wing political origins as a squatter in Hamburg and his new lifestyle as a 德国 star painter, Richter uses iconographic representations from art history, mass media and pop culture in his works. He places these as if on a stage onto a reduced, mystical pictorial background often characterised by darkness, depicting the figures themselves in a painterly excess of light and colour.

This pictorial composition is typical of Richter and can also be found in his stage designs for the 2010 Salzburg Festival.

In Jump from the towers, it seems as if the figures are jumping out of the screen with wide-open eyes, as if in panic, in reference to the images of the 9/11 terrorist attack circulating in the media. Their bodies dissolve into streaks and splashes of colour as they move, and their colourfulness is reminiscent of the view through a thermal imaging camera. This connotation fits Richter\'s recurring theme of the total surveillance of society. The figures\' leap into the unknown triggers fascination and at the same time nervousness in the viewer.

Folio (297 x 194 mm). Large woodcut vignette on title, numerous woodcut illustrations (including 4 unnumbered full-pages at end). Contemporary calf, rebacked. Covers scuffed, light soiling around edges of title, scattered browning and spotting.
Provenance: Arthur Hugh Smith-Barry [Anglo-Irish Baron, 1843-1925] (Marbury Hall bookplates); Oliver Howard [English bookseller and Managing Director of Bernard Quaritch, 1905-1961] (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION of \"the first book about insects published in Britain\" (Salmon, Aurelian Legacy, p 95). Compiled in the late 16th century by Moffett, who is often mistakenly said to have used a microscope in his observations, but in fact made the highly accurate woodcuts with the naked eye. Sir Theodore Turquet de Mayerne published the work posthumously from the manuscript, which is preserved today in the British Library. The illustration of the American Swallowtail on p 98 is the first printed representation of an American butterfly. There are three variant imprints, this example with p 48 incorrectly numbered 52, but these variants do not indicate a chronology — simply that the edition was shared among booksellers. Second, revised edition, with the rare \"Sabbat des Sorciers\" folding plate, often lacking. Recent half-morocco over cloth. Some light dampstaining, thin ink stains at lower margin of last several leaves, browning.

EARLY ISSUE OF THE JOST AMMAN EDITION OF PARACELSUS\'S WORKS. Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, who wrote under the pen name Paracelsus, was a Renaissance pioneer of medicine as well as an astronomer and alchemist. A native of Switzerland, he was educated in Basel, Vienna, and Ferrara, and traveled extensively throughout Europe during his life as an itinerant physician. He is credited with establishing the role of chemistry in medicine, and is sometimes referred to as the \"father of toxicology.\" He recorded the first clinical descriptions of syphilis and epilepsy, and advocated the humane treatment of the mentally ill in an era when they were believed to be possessed by demons. His controversial views alienated both publishers and other physicians, and many of the ideas he proposed were not accepted as medical orthodoxy until hundreds of years after his death. Durling 3464; Sudhoff 62 (both for first edition).

FIRST EDITION of this account of a diplomatic mission to Moscow on behalf of Emperor Leopold I, written by a secretary to the delegation. It includes a description and illustration of the suppression of the Strelzy uprising of 1698/1699, including the executions that followed. Because of the cruelty of Peter the Great\'s response to the uprising, and Korb\'s factual presentation of it, the book was suppressed in 1702 under pressure from the Tsar\'s government. MOFFETT, THOMAS. 1553-1604.:Insectorum sive Minimorum animalium theatrum. London: Thomas Cotes for William Hope, 1634.

PARACELSUS. 1493-1541.:AMMAN, JOST, illustrator. Opus Chyrurgicum. Frankfurt am Mayn: Martin Lechler, 1566 [colophon states 1565]. 4to (290 x 190 mm). 35 woodcut medical engravings (including woodcut portrait on title page), from 13 woodblocks (many signed \"JA\" for Joost Amman).
