FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of Swammerdam\'s work, originally published in Dutch in 1675. Swammerdam made remarkable observations on insect anatomy, including his description in this work of metamorphosis, which had never been covered in greater detail before. Folio (450 x 332 mm). 16 pp booklet and 10 gelatin silver print photographs, each numbered \"185/5000\" in pencil in lower margin, each mounted to mat with gilt titles and blindstamp to overmat. Lacking portfolio, slight soiling to wrapper of text booklet, light foxing to mats. Together with an unused florentine paper mat board.

Lartigue began taking photographs as a boy in France, and continued it as a lifelong pursuit, in spite of studying painting at the Academie Julian in Paris, and considering himself a painter, rather than photographer. His photographs capture playful and often kinetic images of everyday life, including racing cars, airplanes, and people at leisure.

16mo (135 x 75 mm). Woodcut device on title, engraved additional pictorial title by Romeyn de Hooghe, one engraved folding plate, 23 engraved illustrations (most full-page) in the text. Early vellum, ink lettered on spine, three raised bands. Light soiling and spotting on covers, scattered browning, old ink and pencil markings on endpapers.
Provenance: Library of the Princes of Liechtenstein (bookplate).

Second, but first illustrated, edition of a treatise on the unicorn. Bartholin, Professor of Medicine at the University of Copenhagen, examines the history and mythology of the unicorn, together with a study of other one-horned animals such as the narwhal and rhinoceros. The illustrations include a fine frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe, and a copy of Durer\'s celebrated picture of the first rhinoceros imported into Europe. 4to (204 x 158 mm). Text in French and German, French title page dated 1756, engraved German title page dated 1744, 43 engraved illustrations in text. Contemporary brokatpapier boards, rebacked in modern quarter morocco, depicting allegorical figures of spring and summer framed in foliate borders. Boards worn, corners bumped, top margin of German title page trimmed away to remove old ownership inscription (with visible offsetting on French title page), light spotting and minor stains.

Bilingual edition with French text by Jacques Anthony Chauvin, but with new plates created from the final state of Merian\'s original plates. The images reproduce parts of the Totentanz fresco (c.1440) that lined a cemetery wall in Basel. Merian\'s engravings, first published in 1621, made the fresco famous throughout Europe.
