Folio (310 x 208 mm). Printer\'s mark on title and colophon, 122 full-page woodcut illustrations, including standing portrait of Vegetius on verso of title (and repeated twice), and 1 woodcut diagram in the text. Contemporary vellum, inked titles on spine. Soiling to covers, dampstaining to top margins, some old ink marginalia, scattered spotting and browning.

Revised Wechel edition with illustrations by the French humanist Guillaume Budé (1467-1540). This famous collection of works on Roman military systems and methods is one of two known works by Vegetius, a 4th century Roman bureaucrat. The text also includes the \"Strategematum\" of Sextus Julius Frontinus (30-104 A.D.), Roman magistrate and governor of Britain from 74-78; \"De Instruendis,\" a work on tactics by Aelianus (Greek, 2nd century A.D.); and the \"De Vocabulis rei Militaris\" of Julius Modestus, a Roman grammarian in the time of Augustus. The first, Nintoku Tenno, Nihongi (Emperor Nintoku, Chronicle of Japan), from the series Honchoren honcho nijushiko (24 Japanese Paragons of Filial Piety for the Honcho Circle), with a poem by Isonoya Naonari, signed Gakutei; the second, a patterned case and a mirror, with text Horinouchi ren (Horinouchi Club) and a poem by Hitsukatsutei Kusanari, signed Gakutei and sealed Yashima; the third, two beauties in kimono, one standing and one sitting on an engawa veranda with budding willow and prunus trees, with poems by multiple poets, attributed to Ryuryukyo Shinsai (3)

BOUND WITH: FRONSPERGER, LEONHARDT. c.1520–1575. Von Kayserlichem Kriegsrechten Malefiz und Schuldhändlen Ordnung und Regiment.... Frankfurt-am-Main: Georg Rab for Sigmund Feyerabend and Simon Hüter, 1565. First title with woodcut printer\'s mark on title and colophon, 2 woodcuts on verso of title, 121 full-page woodcut illustrations, and 1 woodcut diagram in the text. Second title in blackletter, title page in red and black with woodcut vignette, 5 folding engraved plates, numerous woodcuts in text by Jost Amman (1539-1591). Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin with old re-backing, two brass clasps, date 1565 tooled on upper cover. Covers soiled, dampstaining to lower margins through Vegetius, and to outside margin edges throughout; light worming to first few leaves, spotting and browning throughout.

Two important military works in one volume: The fifth Wechel edition of De re militari, a compendium of ancient military writings, illustrated with woodcut illustrations by Guillaume Budé, together with Fronsperger\'s most renowned work, which gives us a clear picture of military life and routine military operations in Europe in the 16th century.
