Modern morocco gilt. All leaves mounted on stubs, section title laid down, folding map laid down, trimmed with minor chipping along edges, lacking blank H6, colored leaves slightly shorter, some light browning and staining.

Second Latin edition (most plates in first state, see below) of the second part of de Bry\'s \"Great Voyages.\" This is the foundation book \"of any Florida collection because of its first printing of the Le Moyne narrative. Lawrence Wroth has characterized it as the most informative and satisfactory of all the books on the Huguenot colony in Florida. The fascinating plates of Florida Scenes and life engraved by De Bry after Le Moyne\'s drawings, make this an indispensable Florida items. Le Moyne\'s narrative was first published in French, Paris 1586\" (Streeter). The map was considerable interest: Hondius based his maps of the area in 1606 on this one, \"the atlas in which it occurred was Mercator\'s and his fame was enough to prolong its authority until the Blaeu VIRGINIAE partis australis, c. 1638\" (Burden 79). LIMITED EDITION, signed by the author on the title page, stamped 0007 on front paste-down of portfolio. These powerful drawings were made by Polish-born Zielezinski while he was a prisoner at Dachau concentration camp. He later settled in the U.S., where he became a prolific illustrator and book jacket designer under the name George Ziel.

FIRST EDITION of this rare work by outspoken free-thinker Vanini, denouncing atheism perhaps to re-ingratiate himself with the church. However, his second book made his radical ideas clear, and he was eventually arrested, tortured, and burned at the stake. Peignot Livres condamnés, II, 174; Thorndike VI, 568-573.

Lacking colophon 5i4, title trimmed and soiled, small hole on 3V3 with loss to 2 woodcuts, some foxing, staining and occasional small tear throughout, index leaves heavily worn and soiled, with one leaf strengthened at fore-margin.
Provenance: Thomas Leman (contemporary ownership signature on paste-down and title); another inscription dated 1656.

FIRST EDITION of this great herbal by \"the best known of English herbalists\" (Arber). The woodcuts include nearly 200 native plants which had not previously been described, as well as the first illustration of the potato. STC 11750; Henrey 154; Hunt 174; Nissen BBI 698.
