Oblong 8vo (110 x 142 mm). Engraved printer\'s device on title, engraved armorial dedication on verso of title, 122 engraved full-page maps plans. Rebacked contemporary brown morocco gilt, retaining original spine with three raised bands, all edges gilt. Wear and light soiling to covers, margins a bit trimmed, just touching first line of text on title page, light dampstaining, erased ink ownership inscription on title, paper repairs to title and last 2 leaves.

Italian edition of the \"pocket\" version of Ortelius\'s Theatrum, with plates made in the studio of Philip Galle, translated from the Latin by Giovanni Paulet d\'Anversa. Published 4 years after Ortelius\'s death, it bears the obviously erroneous publication date of 1502 on the title. Vrients added three plates of Celestial and Terrestrial maps from previous editions, and in this form it was published in Latin, Italian, Dutch, French, and English. Koeman IIIA 332:22.

As Valerio Adami wrote in 1968, “The hand is a kind of seismograph giving body to the traces left by the circuit of imagination”: the drawing hand is an instrument that records what the eye looks at and the mind sees. It is the starting point of the artist’s method: the hand-seismograph that in the “journey of drawing” goes through the kaleidoscope of his inspiration, and that in the essentiality of the line reworks, summarizes, juxtaposes, disassembles and reassembles it. […]

The lines of the drawing, eternally moving as the mind distilling them, - since for Adami “nulla dies sine linea” (no day without a line) – are the “off the beaten track” trails that the artist constantly crosses and connects. He does so by bringing distant worlds together, from the Ganges to the Matterhorn and from Paris to Finland by making the Greek mythological narrative coexist with New York street life, by recalling the light spells of Lake Maggiore or the clouds at sunrise.

Small 4to (200 x 155 mm). Woodcut initials, some hand-colored, blackletter text. 19th century armorial calf, rebacked. Leaf XCII lacking, replaced by a blank, bookplate to front paste-down, light dampstaining to outside lower corners, extensive early inked marginalia, light scattered browning and spotting.
Provenance: Robert Loyd-Lindsay, VC, KCB, 1st Baron Wantage (armorial binding); J.L.E. Dreyer (Danis Astronomer, 1852-1926, bookplate).

Rare early Latin edition of the collected astrological works of Abraham Ibn Ezra. Born in Tudela, in Moorish Spain, Ibn Ezra traveled extensively throughout the Middle East, and had a great outpouring of written works after about 1140, comprising poetry, commentary on the Torah, works on Hebrew grammar, philosophy, and science. His scientific works on astrology were written when he lived in Beziers, France, between 1147 and 1148.
