Folio. 24 mounted color plates, 78 mounted halftones, including portrait of Roerich by his son Sviatoslav Roerich. Publisher\'s tan cloth stamped in gilt. Upper joint cracked through, sunned, corners bumped, hinges reinforced, toning.

LIMITED EDITION, number 165 of 500 copies. Celebrated Russian painter, writer, archeologist, philosopher and mystic Roerich settled with his family in the Kullu Valley in India in 1929. The mansion on the estate became the home to the Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute that the Roerichs founded in 1928. This opulent volume pulls together excerpts from a diary kept during his often treacherous travels through the Himalayas, and reproductions of many of his best known works including his \"Banners of the East\" series of nineteen paintings devoted to the world\'s greatest religious teachers including Buddha, Confucius, Moses, Jesus and Mohammed. Many of these pictures are now in the Roerich Museum in New York City.

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH with the often lacking portrait of the author. \"Harvey considered this to be the culminating work of his life, and more significant than de Motu Cordis. ... Harvey was among the first to disbelieve the erroneous doctrine of the \'preformation\' of the foetus; he maintained that the organism derives from the ovum by the gradual building up and aggregation of its parts. Folio (598 x 480 mm). 43 hand-colored plates. Contemporary green half morocco and marbled boards, protected by a contemporary cloth sleeve, some light wear to spine ends, corners and extremities, front hinge cracked, cords firm, the sleeve with splitting and dust soiling, a few text leaves and 3 plates with short marginal tears and minor dampstaining, a few leaves becoming loose at end.
Provenance: Edward James Norris (1851-1927), President of the Educational Publishing Company, presented to him by the country of France, 29 September 1889, as an honorary \"Medaille d\'Or\" accompanied by a diploma granted to \"A Popular éducator, Massachusetts\" (available as photocopy).

FIRST EDITION OF THE DEFINITIVE WORK ON THE FAMILY OF CATS, in which Elliot describes and illustrates all the species of cats then known. \"Among the Families which constitute the Class Mammalia no more attractive one can be found than that of Felidae, as its members possess in the highest degree a beauty, both of form and coloring, most gratifying to the eye, and are also endowed with physical strength and weapons of offence not surpassed by any known creature now living upon the earth. The Family comprises not only the largest and most ferocious of the beasts of prey, but in which Elliot describes and illustrates all the species of cats then known also the graceful little animal that delights to make its home within man\'s abode\" (Introduction). Wolf worked from specimens provided by Elliot, who visited all the great museums and zoological societies on both sides of the Atlantic. See Nissen ZBI 1279; see Wood p 332.

“Mein Vater ... bekam die kleinformatige Arbeit von Maria Lassnig während der Herstellung des Kataloges “Austria. Biennale di Venezia 1980. Maria Lassnig” ... in der Druckerei Brüder Rosenbaum 1980 geschenkt.
Leider befand Maria Lassnig das Ektachrom ... ihres Gemäldes “Die Last des Fleisches” ... in der Farbwiedergabe nicht zufriedenstellend.
... mein Vater bat sie entsprechend um eine Orientierungshilfe ...
Maria Lassnig fertigte zuhause die vorliegende Gouache ... an.
Nach dem zweiten Probedruck und diversen Farbkorrekturen bekam mein Vater ... die Zustimmung Maria Lassnigs für den Druck sowie die Gouache von “Die Last des Fleisches” als Dankeschön zum Geschenk.
Die Arbeit blieb seither in Familienbesitz.”

Excerpt from an email from 20 May 2022:
“My father [...] received the small-format work by Maria Lassnig during the production of the catalogue Austria. Biennale di Venezia 1980.
Maria Lassnig [...] in the Rosenbaum Brothers printing house in 1980.

Unfortunately, Maria Lassnig found the ectachrome [...] of her painting „Die Last des Fleisches“ [...] was not satisfactory in its colour reproduction [...]. Accordingly, my father asked her for a guide [...] Maria Lassnig made the present gouache at home [...]. After the second test print and various colour corrections, my father [...] received Maria Lassnig’s approval for the print as well as the gouache of„Die Last des Fleisches“ as a thank-you gift. The work has remained in the family ever since.”
