LIMITED EDITION, number 91 of 100 copies. First printing, with 143 pages (rather than the later printing with 152 pages). Edmund Davis came into his inheritance at 27 years old, and turned most of his attention to angling. He was a founding member of the Cascapedia Club, and his work on one of the great North American Salmon rivers is scarce. Bruns D25; Gee 88; Litchfield 71.

4to (200 x 145 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, 20 full-page and 4 small engraved illustrations in text. Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked retaining original covers and spine. Lacking additional engraved title page and final blank, inked annotations on front fly-leaf, some ink underlining, browning, especially to frontispiece.

Second edition, published a year after the first, of this work on the toxic effect of vipers. Severino argued, among other things, that the magnetic effect of music could act as cure. A number of the plates have a mythological theme. Nissen 3829; Osler 3961; Waller 8893.

FIRST EDITION of this copiously illustrated anthology of portents, natural marvels, monsters, curiosities and unsolved mysteries. Includes sightings of Halley\'s Comet and an unidentified flying object sighted in Arabia in 1479 that resembles a spaceship (see p. 494). Adams W-250; Durling 2878; Wellcome I, 3917.

Mother wasnt thinking about the food/but great uncle Toms sideboard. \"I wonder who he\'s left it/too\" she said, but aunt Annie (who was only an aunt by/marriage) said, \"Jane, youve enough furniture, I could do/ with that sideboard\". Just then Sarah\'s voice came from/upstairs, \"Everybody\'s making for the front gardens and/I can hear a bull bellowing\", So mother, aunt Mary,/and aunt Frances rushed upstairs to see what was happening/sure enough, Joe Wroe the Butcher was so busy watching/great uncle Toms funeral that he forgot to fasten his bulls in,/so out they came and away they ran. Two were soon caught but/one ran down into Lees, and the thought of it deterred several people/ who were coming to the house for the funeral tea which made it/easier for mother and the aunts. Oblong folio (290 x 183 mm). Engraved title page and 19 engraved plates. Modern brown morocco antique. Covers slightly warped, plates and engraved title trimmed to image borders and laid down on old laid paper, some with partial hand-coloring, a few chips and tears into image areas, light spotting and toning.

Though the plates are not signed by Payne, this appears to be a later edition of Payne\'s Flora, published by Roger Daniel under the dual Latin and English titles \"Animalium quadrupedum, auium, florum, fructuum, muscarum et vermium omnis generis verae delineationes in æes incisae. mdah; A booke of beast, birds, flowers, fruits, flies, and wormes, exactly drawne with their liuely colours truly described.\" This edition formed the basis for Roger Walton\'s pattern book A View of the Creation (1666), which copies the plates from this edition very closely. Payne studied engraving under the Dutch masters William and Simon van de Passe, and his flowers are copied from Crispijn van de Passe\'s Altera Pars (1603-1605). The animals are derived from Joris Hoefnagel\'s Archetypa studaque (1592).
