A FINE COPY OF THE LIMITED EDITION OF SYZK\'S BOOK OF ESTHER, number \"XLII\" of 175 copies, with the additional suite of illustrations. According to Szyk expert Irvin Ungar, \"Because [Szyk] understood what it meant for the few, the proud, to stand up to the many, he ultimately dedicated his life to fighting as a self-described \'soldier in art\' against the might of the modern-day Hamans and Holoferneses who threatened Jewish survival\" (\"The Arts: Arthur Szyk and His Books of Esther,\" in: Hadassah Magazine, Purim 2010).

He founded the Linnaean Society in 1788, and wrote extensively on Botany. These treatises contain the first description of Boronia. No copy traced at auction since 1985. Banded Agate, Rock Crystal Quartz and Enamel Clock by Manfred Wild :Circa 1989

Agate carvings originating in Idar-Oberstein are always fine and the present one is no exception. Each of the two bears is carved from the same rough agate as displayed by their book-matched patterns of banding. The eyes are set with small diamonds, rimmed in 18K yellow gold. The spherical clock is formed of two halves of natural rock crystal quartz of high transparency with a wide border of translucent green enamel on a guilloché ground with 18K borders. Viewable from both sides, the dial and the mechanism can be seen through the front and back. The dial is inscribed Neuchatel and Swiss Made. Raised on an oval base of Russian black obsidian trimmed in brushed 18K yellow gold, signed EB for Emil Becker and M. Wild for Manfred Wild. Measuring 14 1/2 x 5 1/2 x 4in (36.9 x 14 x 10.2cm)

16mo (135 x 75 mm). Woodcut device on title, engraved additional pictorial title by Romeyn de Hooghe, one engraved folding plate, 23 engraved illustrations (most full-page) in the text. Early vellum, ink lettered on spine, three raised bands. Light soiling and spotting on covers, scattered browning, old ink and pencil markings on endpapers.
Provenance: Library of the Princes of Liechtenstein (bookplate).

Second, but first illustrated, edition of a treatise on the unicorn. Bartholin, Professor of Medicine at the University of Copenhagen, examines the history and mythology of the unicorn, together with a study of other one-horned animals such as the narwhal and rhinoceros. The illustrations include a fine frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe, and a copy of Durer\'s celebrated picture of the first rhinoceros imported into Europe. Das von Pierre-Auguste Renoir rechts unten im Stein schwarz signierte Werk „Enfants jouant à balle“ stammt aus einer Auflage von 200 Exemplaren, die von Auguste Clot gedruckt und von Ambroise Vollard verlegt wurde. Dieses in 10 Farben gezogene Werk ist einer von nur vier Farbdrucken, die Renoir Zeit seines Lebens geschaffen hat. Unter anderem ist es auch unter dem Titel „La Récolte des Pommes de Terre“ (Die Kartoffelernte) bekannt. Die Farblithographie zeigt vier Mädchen, die an einem schönen Sommertag sorglos auf einem Feld spielen. HAECKEL, ERNST, attrib.:Late nineteenth-century album of 20 watercolors and 5 pen-and-ink drawings of landscapes in Bali, Sumatra and Southeast Asia, identified in an unknown hand as the work of Ernst Haeckel, 195 x 260 (sheet size), watercolors vary, each captioned descriptively beneath and numbered 1-25 in the upper corner, 38 leaves total (13 blank), in original half-morocco album, recently rebacked, titled in gilt to upper cover \"Aquarellen im Zeichnungen.\"

A FINE, ACCOMPLISHED COLLECTION OF DRAWINGS AND WATERCOLORS IN THE STYLE OF ERNST HAECKEL, accompanied by a manuscript note in the upper margin of one drawing identifying it as Haeckel. Haeckel famously documented the region.

This copy includes the \"Characterum Indices,\" letterpress transcriptions of Vesalius\'s explanatory notes keyed to the woodcuts, printed from 227 of the original woodblocks used for Vesalius\'s De humani corporis fabrica and his Epitome, which were tragically destroyed during World War II. The impressions in this modern fine press edition are darker and clearer than the original 1543 and 1555 editions of the Fabrica.
