16mo (135 x 75 mm). Woodcut device on title, engraved additional pictorial title by Romeyn de Hooghe, one engraved folding plate, 23 engraved illustrations (most full-page) in the text. Early vellum, ink lettered on spine, three raised bands. Light soiling and spotting on covers, scattered browning, old ink and pencil markings on endpapers.
Provenance: Library of the Princes of Liechtenstein (bookplate).
Second, but first illustrated, edition of a treatise on the unicorn. Bartholin, Professor of Medicine at the University of Copenhagen, examines the history and mythology of the unicorn, together with a study of other one-horned animals such as the narwhal and rhinoceros. The illustrations include a fine frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe, and a copy of Durer\'s celebrated picture of the first rhinoceros imported into Europe. :Nova Belgica et Anglia nova. Amsterdam: [1642 or later].
Hand-colored double-page engraved map, 388 x 507 mm, Dutch text on verso, decorative cartouche flanked by a native person on each side and surmounted by the Dutch Republic crest, scale bar flanked by mer-children, decorated with three ships, three canoes paddled by natives, a Mohican village, various wildlife including deer, foxes, bears, egrets, rabbits, cranes, turkeys and for the first time on a map beavers, polecats and otters. Framed. Centerfold reinforced on verso, small area of skinning in the Atlantic, but an attractive example.
Blaeu\'s seminal map was the first full printed representation of the manuscript map of Adriaen Block. It is one of the earliest to name Nieu Amsterdam and the earliest to depict insular Manhattan. Burden North America 241.
