Folio (279 x 184 mm). 18 engraved plates, maps and plans (10 folding, 1 with hand-coloring). Modern half morocco and marbled boards. Margins trimmed, worming in quires R through U with losses, one plate lacking half of image and mounted as a single-page plate, repaired tears to some plates, repaired tear at bottom edge of M3 into text, light dampstaining and browning.

FIRST EDITION of this account of a diplomatic mission to Moscow on behalf of Emperor Leopold I, written by a secretary to the delegation. It includes a description and illustration of the suppression of the Strelzy uprising of 1698/1699, including the executions that followed. Because of the cruelty of Peter the Great\'s response to the uprising, and Korb\'s factual presentation of it, the book was suppressed in 1702 under pressure from the Tsar\'s government. Die hier angebotene Radierung gehört zu Ernst Ludwig Kirchners Werkgruppe der sog. Straßenszenen. Die Arbeiten dieser Werkgruppe sind zwischen 1913 und 1915 in Berlin entstanden und thematisieren das Leben in der sich zur Metropole entwickelnden Großstadt. Ein besonderes Augenmerk legte Kirchner auf das pulsierende Straßen- und Nachtleben. Der Werktitel „Drei Kokotten bei Nacht“ verrät uns den Bildinhalt der 1914 entstandenen Radierung. Als Kokotten wurden im 19. Jahrhundert leichte Mädchen oder elegante Halbwelt-Damen bezeichnet. Zur besagten Werkgruppe gehören mehrere Gemälde, zahlreiche Skizzenbuchblätter, Zeichnungen sowie Druckgrafiken.

BENOIS, ALEXANDRE. 1870-1960.:Costume design of Monsieur Jourdain, for the Balanchine ballet of Molière\'s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, produced by the Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo, 1932, watercolor, ink and graphite, 308 x 193 mm (12 1/8 x 7 1/2 inches), signed by Benois in pencil in lower left corner.

Benois founded the Mir iskusstva [World of Art] group with Sergei Diaghilev and was one of the most important designers of the Ballets Russes, second only to Léon Bakst. His best known sets and costumes were done for the original production of the Stravinsky ballet Petrouchka (1911) based on his idea. Benois emigrated to France in 1927 and continued to work for the theater in Paris, Milan, London, New York and elsewhere. Both Benois and Balanchine were associated with the Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo, the successor to the original Ballets Russes, that formed after Diaghilev\'s death in 1932. Balanchine revived his ballet in 1979 for the New York City Opera with the assistance of Jerome Robbins and Peter Martins and Rudolph Nureyev in his first Balanchine production. Sold with 3 additional costume designs, two from an unknown artist, and one in pencil attributed to Georgii Yakulov.
